Fortezza da Basso Park

Fortezza da Basso is a Renaissance fortress in Florence commissioned by the prestigious Medici family in 1534. Its original purpose was to solidify the family’s control of the city, house military troops, and most importantly, to impress Florentines with its monumental appearance.

The Fortezza is now the main venue of the city’s exhibition center and hosts both national and international events. The interior of the fortress features a modern, 3-floor pavilion. Large scale events at the Fortezza include the International Handicrafts Trade Fair and an international Art and Tourism fair dedicated to culture and art tourism. Up to 15,000 visitors attend these events daily, making the 300,000 square foot Fortezza one of the most popular sites in Florence.
