Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world – so why would anyone want to be inside all the time? Well, they wouldn’t, which is why there are tons of great outdoor activities and events all over the city.
First off, there are the plazas (piazzas in Italian). These outdoor meeting spots are the focal points of Florence social life. People come to meet up with friends, start off their evenings by popping into some cafés for a little aperitivo, and then head out for a full night of bar-hopping. One of the best and most famous squares is Piazza Santa Croce. The piazza is considered the true heart of the city and the main launching point for any number of outdoor activities in Florence.
One of the best Florence outdoor activities, though, is actually not in Florence. Instead, just outside of the city is the famed Chianti Region where some of the greatest wine in the world is bottled on a daily basis. Touring the wineries is an excellent reason to get outside.
For great outdoor events in Florence there are myriad festivals all throughout the year. For starters, there is Carnevale, which is the enormous celebration leading up to Lent. Then there’s St. John the Baptist day every June 24th, which commemorates the patron saint of Florence with extravagant fireworks displays. But for something really cool that’s actually in Siena, an hour south of Florence, is the Palio horse race. This annual celebration takes place inside the Piazza del Campo and pits different Siena neighborhoods against each other in a cramped race that’s been run for over 300 years.
Finally, no outdoor excursion in Florence would be complete without a trip to the Boboli Gardens, where majestic sculptures mix with one of the best views of the entire metropolis.
