Calcio Storico Fiorentino Description

Calcio Storico Fiorentino - Sports in Florence.

Combining elements of football, rugby, and a bare-knuckled free-for-all steeped in five-hundred years of tradition, Calcio Storico is an annual sporting event in Florence that looks a lot like what a non-lethal gladiator bout probably looked like back in the day.

Held annually on the third week of June, the event involves four teams of twenty-seven players each that gather inside Piazza Santa Croce and essentially beat each other senseless while trying to prevent the opposing team from scoring. Earning points is achieved by tossing a soccer-sized ball over a four-foot wall on either end of the field.

Six referees dressed in Renaissance-garb do their best to enforce the rules, which can basically be summed up as “no sucker punching” and “no head kicks.” That doesn’t mean opposing team members aren’t free to openly pummel each other, however, so after the pair of fifty minute bouts conclude, most participants are bleeding profusely.

The two teams who win the first round of Calcio Storico proceed to battle it out on June 24th at the same location to determine the overall winner. Winning team members receive the undying pride of their countrymen…and a pile of steaks.

Before each game, a procession that includes all of the varying team members, as well as drummers, flag wavers, and tons of Florentines (all dressed in historical garb) march from Piazza Santa Maria Novella to Piazza della Signoria, then down Via de'Neri, and up Via dei Benci before finally reaching Piazza Santa Croce.

The precession in itself is a sight to see, which is good considering Calcio Storico tickets can be very hard to come by given its popularity. Tickets for Calcio Storico can be purchased at a box office at via Alamanni 39, with ticket prices usually ranging from €15– €40 (with an additional €7 surcharge). If available, tickets can also be purchased directly in Piazza Santa Croce on game day, as well as at the Teatro Verdi located at Via Ghibellina 101 (about a block from the Piazza).

Tickets can also be purchased online at www.boxofficetoscana.it and www.boxol.it, though it’s best to check these sites up to a month before the event as presale times vary year-to-year.
