Patrons looking for a dynamic bar scene will find it at The Lion’s Fountain, a lively venue that brews up some quality entertainment for its clientele of college students and English-speaking travelers.

Named for the lion-headed fountain built into the wall across from the bar, the pub features a typical Irish décor of green-shaded lamps and beer posters, as well as not-so-typical items like American college t-shirts almost completely covering much of the ceiling and walls filled with humorous doodles from patrons past.

The space is rounded out by a long bar, an open area with a TV tuned to sports, and a corner nook that provides seating for one lucky group at a time.

Naturally the collegiate décor brings with it an equally collegiate crowd that shows up to The Lion’s Fountain ready to take advantage of the affordable drinks, mingle with the lively patrons, and get a little rowdy.

There’s only one table here, so arrive early to claim it for your group. It’s situated in this cool little corner and offers a bit more comfort than the rest of the crowd enjoys.

I've spent many an evening at the Lion's Fountain, watching the game with friends while having a couple drinks. The clientele is almost 100% American, the shot menu is extensive and interesting, the staff is super friendly, and the food is absolutely terrible. But, the prices are pretty good, the drinks are strong, and it's a great place to go if you're looking to make a couple new friends. You won't miss out if you don't go, but you'll probably have a fun night if you do.

Catherine Kauffelt Feb 3, 2013 3.0 stars The quintessential sports bar As I write this I am sitting in the Lion's Fountain in the Santa Croce district of Florence enjoying a Guinness and observing some true sports fans watch the Florence soccer team defeat the French. The walls covered in sharpie writing and the ceiling covered with countless college t-shirts, the Lion's Fountain provides a warm atmosphere regardless of whether you are an American looking for a little piece of home or a local looking for a fun place to watch a soccer game. Day or night I enjoy coming here to catch a game and here the locals cheer and chant for their team. Not to mention they will be playing a Super Bowl tonight and as a San Francisco local there is no way I am going to miss my 49ers play. Pull up a bar stool and grab a beer at the Lion's Fountain.

Emilia Gambardella Jan 13, 2013 3.0 stars Get your football fix while abroad I don't know why I even bothered spending time being optimistic about the New York Jets this past season, but I couldn't help it. Earlier in the fall, after about a month or so in Florence, I just needed a football fix. I walk by this bar every day on my way home from class, and noticed that they are always playing a variety of sports games. I called on a Sunday to see if the Jet game would be on, and it was! I arrived a little early, so there weren't a lot of people there yet. The bar tenders were friendly, and the decor (American college apparel) was really cool. Over the course of the evening it got more and more crowded, and it was a pleasant mix between Italians and tourists. We had a really nice conversation with a fellow American- from football to Dante! It's a place that lends itself to a variety of people and conversations.

It is a fun college bar to meet with fellow Americans for a hometown vibe or to mingle with other foreigners, which is my favorite. I suggest using it as a starting point of the evening because the drinks are cheap and it is within a good walking distance to other bars. It is also great to be able to walk right outside and park yourself at one of the tables to people watch while sipping on your vino or drink of choice. I had many fun nights here meeting up with new and old friends and pretending to watch football.

comurp12 Dec 12, 2012 3.0 stars very American bar If you're abroad from the US and looking for your typical college town bar, this is it. It's great for the very American atmosphere with a lot of students, accented nicely by all the college and frat shirts hanging from the ceiling and list of drink specials named from various US colleges. It's also a good place to go to watch football; for the FSU vs UF game they set it up so all the students missing home could celebrate and watch! It's definitely a place to start your night, and a good meeting point for friends before heading out for the rest of the night.

American college shirts and sweatshirts line the walls and ceiling, making it clear that it's an American bar. The bartenders are nice and American. Also, the drinks are reasonably priced. People mingle but also are able to sit at a booth or bar stools to enjoy your friends company.

bturp11 Nov 27, 2012 3.0 stars A comfort abroad The Lion’s Fountain is the place to go for American students who are abroad and are looking for a little piece of home. The bar is an Irish pub that is completely decorated in American college gear. University T-shirts cover the ceiling, with sharpie signatures covering the walls from students who want to be remembered in the popular pub. Any given nights there are lives bands, karaoke nights and pub-crawls to take you around to some of the best bars and clubs in the city. It’s a great bar to pre-game at, find some other Americans and explore the city together since kids from all different types of abroad programs frequent the comfort and familiarity of the Lions Fountain!

nishashah Aug 1, 2012 3.0 stars Always a good time at Lion's Fountain This bar is right at the end of what college students abroad like to call "bar street" in Florence. Lion's Fountain is a great place to start your night with a couple of beers or a gin and tonic. After I discovered Bulmer's Irish cider I was pleasantly surprised to find that Lion's served it. This pub is packed with college students studying in Florence who go there to listen to top-10 music, pre-game with shots, or see if their university's t-shirt has been added to the decor and tacked onto the ceiling. Lion's Fountain has a main room and bar area with some bar stools and tables. But when this area starts to get packed, it is nice to move to one of the tables outside or chill out for a bit in the smaller room/bar area around the corner.
