Easily distinguished by its Kelly-green door, Fiddler’s Elbow is an authentic Irish pub with a friendly clientele and an unbeatable atmosphere for sports enthusiasts – and with a variety of rooms and seating areas, the pub offers patrons diverse environments to match any mood.

A patio provides a stunning view of the magnificent Santa Maria Novella Basilica, but the Florentine influence stops there – because inside, Fiddler’s Elbow is all Irish. Vintage drinking paraphernalia and Irish witticisms decorate the walls, while dark wood furnishings and arched brick ceilings create rustically cozy spaces for chatty groups and mingling singles.

The pub attracts a pleasantly varied international crowd with many English speakers, and is particularly popular with sports fanatics. The three TVs are constantly tuned to rugby or football, and the crowd can get quite rowdy during big games.

Overall, though, Fiddler’s Elbow attracts a laid-back and welcoming clientele and creates an atmosphere perfect for a low-key evening of watching sports and shooting pool.

The oldest Irish pub in Florence.

I have been here a handful of times and I would say every trip has been pleasant enough- typical Irish pub with a little more room in the back to have a little more of a quiet environment, unless it's live music night! The reason I think I like this place so much is they informed me that "Kilkenny", the beer served all over Florence, is in fact "Smithwick's" like we find everywhere else. Apparently since Italians can't pronounce that name, they rebranded it. PRAISE FIDDLERS ELBOW BARTENDER WHO'S NAME I CANNOT REMEMBER. (It's my favorite beer and had been searching for it for 2.5 months) Anyway- so this place is pretty deep. They even have a small pool table in the back right to play on and a dart board. Being an Irish pub, they speak English and Italian so don't be afraid to strike up a convo with the bartenders- all have been friendly so far. Like I mentioned before- They have live music nights at this bar. Some nights it's open mic and others they have a house band. A few of the acts are very good and the others...it's hit or miss. Let's hope you're lucky and head to Fiddlers on a good night!

Delicious pints, reasonable prices, gregarious staff, and cozy atmosphere make Fiddler's Elbow your bar away from home.

Tucked into a niche along the Piazza Santa Maria Novella, Fiddler's Elbow serves up a tasty assortment of beers on tap in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. I recently ducked into the Elbow (which has sister locations in other Italian cities) to escape one of Florence's torrential downpours. It's dark wood interior, long polished bar, and laughing barkeeps give the English-speaking traveler the immediate, reassuring feel of a typical Irish bar abroad, now seemingly a staple in every European city. Fiddler's Elbow has a lived-in, homey feel; a row of antique clocks lines the mantle above the bar, the wooden benches and chairs creak with the use of years. But while I expected to encounter the usual run of Guinness and Harp on tap, and perhaps a chalk-board advertising weekly live entertainment, what I hadn't anticipated was how international both the staff and the patrons were. Americans as well as local Florentines sidled up along the bar, some of them clearly regulars, chatting with the servers in several languages. The Elbow doesn't have a kitchen, but they do offer a better-than-usual selection of bar snacks and small sandwiches. The place had a late-afternoon tranquility to it; nights, however, look like another story. The assortment of reasonably-priced liquors live music, pool table, and special events like their Halloween Party promise a lively evening. Next time I'll be sure to head back after sundown. pros: atmosphere, staff, beer and liquor selection, prices cons: no kitchen menu
