International Drum and Bass Event Meeting on Saturday 13th April 2013 at Viper Theatre, Florence
Steven C. Jun 24, 2013
In Florence it is rare to be handed a club event flyer advertising a high profile Dj playing underground electronic Drum and Bass and Dubstep music. In a City that has a large American and International student population, bar and club music policies are often sadly on a repeated mix of commercial chart music so as not to offend the majority. When looking at the flyer I had been given on a rainy January evening I noticed something even rarer, the promotion for the ‘International Drum n Bass Meeting’ at Viper Theatre was in full swing 3 months prior to the date of the event. Forward planning is not usually a quality shared by either the Florence nightclub promoters or the party goers themselves. This is explained by two main factors. 1) Some students and visitors are only in Florence short-term. 2) When you are going out 3-4 nights a week life can often become a bit of a blur and planning anything in advance seems complicated! Another refreshing thing about this event was the venue chosen to host it. Viper Theatre is a purpose built concert venue which has a capacity of approx 1000. Its two rooms are both kitted out with state of the art sound and lighting. Artists and Djs that have performed at Viper over the last 12 months have been Carl Craig, Fritz Kalkbrenner (Live), Vitalic (Live), Europe, Chris Liebing, Above and Beyond and many more. Situated a 20 minute drive away from Florence centre it is not suggested that you just turn up at Viper and hope for the best! Being specifically an event venue with independent promoters at the helm each week it is essential that you check the venues informative website http://www.viperclub.eu and see if any of the artists and varied music policies is of interest. Arriving on Saturday 13th April we knew exactly what we were letting ourselves in for musically and were looking forward to dancing to a healthy slab of non mainstream and non commercial bass driven beats. At a low cost €12 advanced ticket price we certainly got our moneys worth with the heavyweight line up of UK and Italian Djs and MCs doing the business on the night. Here is a video I took myself on the night! http://youtu.be/BRNieUZX9kc Points of note from my first time at Viper were just how crisp and loud the sound systems were and also how good the venues intelligent lighting systems were. Technically Viper is on a par with many of the nightclubs I have been to in England and being purpose built for concerts the flow of the venue was excellent. The event itself was very busy yet there was always enough room to dance, watch the dancefloor from above or just chat with friends at the bar. Operationally the venues bar staff and security were exceptionally professional from start to finish. I am experienced in running events and nightclubs back in England so I can see when a venue is poorly managed and maintained. Credit to Viper and its team for being polite and courteous at all times, from initially entering the venue to asking for directions to the toilet the staff spoke great English and were very positive and happy to help. I was also very happy to notice that the cost of drinks were fairly priced and that the bar staff were generous in their measures. This means a lot when we have paid extra money for taxis at a cost of €20 each time to and from the venue. The party goers inside were extremely pleasant and energetic people as is often the case with more music orientated events as you feel like you are all there for the same reason. The only criticism I have about Viper is that I do not see much advertising and marketing of its events calendar in Florence City centre however I suspect this is the responsibility of the independent promoters rather than the venue itself. I would recommend Viper to anyone who wishes to experience alternative music or an artist of their choice and who most importantly wants to experience something new. International students take note; Florence is not all about dancing to Rihanna and being surrounded by other students in an American themed bar. If you do not consider yourself a ‘club’ person then this venue may not be for you as the best way to get involved at Viper is to get your head down and dance! Viper is closed in the Summer and events are often on random dates and never the same so check the listings for prices. Try to buy a ticket in advance as this is cheaper than paying cash on the door. See you on the dancefloor!
