Green Day is a punk rock band that formed in 1987 in Northern California. Like The Offspring and Bad Religion, they are most famous for resurrecting punk in the mainstream eye.
Green Day's debut album, Dookie (1994), established their presence in the music industry, selling 10 million copies nationwide. While their subsequent albums, Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000), were not as commercially successful as Dookie, they still sold well and kept Green Day on the map.
In 2004, Green Day released American Idiot, which carries strong political messages. It's most famous for the singles, "American Idiot", "Holiday", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".
21st Century Breakdown (2009) achieved worldwide notoriety. Singer and guitarist Bille Joe Armstrong described it as a representation of an era where we "try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us". Accordingly, the socially conscious themes of isolation and anger towards authority comprise this album's main messages.
In the fall of 2012, Green Day released a trio of albums – ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!. The first part of this trilogy contained "a hipper, richer grip in the details" (Rolling Stone). Critics remark that ¡Dos! has a "wider range of sounds and styles" and is "way more impressive" than their previous work (Los Angeles Times), while ¡Tré! received wide variety of praises, generally claiming that it's more upbeat than the previous two albums.
Green Day is widely considered one of the greatest American punk bands of all time, so the opportunity to attend a Green Day show is one that mustn't be passed up.
