Tower of Power (TOP) has been widely considered one of the funkiest sounding American R&B-based horn section bands since its inception over forty-four years ago. The Oakland, California natives’ greatest hits include “You’re Still a Young Man,” “So Very Hard to Go,” “Soul with a Capital S,” “Don’t Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream),” and “Soul Vaccination.” TOP has released over fifteen studio albums and over five live albums.
TOP continues to tour today, but the band has seen many personnel changes. More than sixty musicians have recorded or toured with the band in the past forty years. The eclectic band has performed with the cream of the crop in terms of modern artists – everyone from Aerosmith to Phish to Elton John, among countless others.
“So Very Hard To Go,” an early TOP song, was featured in the 2002 movie City of God as well as Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro. Tower of Power is known to play “The Star Spangled Banner” before playoff games for San Francisco professional sports teams.
