Tame Impala Bio

Tame Impala

Few bands are as weird and provocative as their names, but Tame Impala manages to be just that. Hailing from Perth, Australia, this psychedelic rock quintet chose its moniker not after the famous car, but the gazelle-like animal for which it is named.

Tame Impala was formed in 2007 by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, known for indie projects like the Dee Dee Drums and Pond. The band toured the Australian indie scene, making a name for itself with its mix of old-school Beatles-style rock and roll, surf rock, and psychedelic music, and creating a reverb-soaked brand of indie music that wowed audiences the world over. The band’s 2010 album Innerspeaker, released by Modular Music, garnered them the Best New Music position by Pitchfork that year.

Tame Impala’s live shows are high-energy and chill at the same time. The band members project an infectious vibe full of laughter and playfulness while accentuating the druggy, mind-bending ambiance that indie fans have come to expect from them.

With 2012’s Lonerism finding its way onto the best-of lists of several well-known indie press junkets, Tame Impala is proving a fresh and inspiring young talent in the independent music scene. Ride the Impala!

…Well that escalated quickly. With their second album Lonerism being named Rolling Stone, Triple J Radio, and NME (among many others)’s Best Album of 2012, Tame Impala are blowing up, and I couldn’t be happier for the psychedelic band from Australia. These guys groove, with hypnotic instrumentation and Kevin Parker’s spacey vocals that recall John Lennon at his LSD best. It’s the perfect music for kicking back after a long day, with so many layers that you actually want to focus your attention on listening to the music rather than having it serve as background noise. When was the last time that modern guitar music inspired that? Kevin’s voice holds up perfectly live, and the band sounds tight, with plenty of jams interspersed through hits like “Mind Mischief,” “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” and “Half Glass Full of Wine.” With their future looking bright, Tame Impala will be mainstays on my concert calendar when they roll into town for years to come.

Currently touring the USA, Australian band Tame Impala are an incredible act to see live. If you get a chance to go along to one of their gigs you may find yourself in a state of musical euphoria as their washed out, dreamy, pop melodies blow your mind with every note. Originating from Perth in Western Australia, the band could be characterized as classic psychedelic rock/pop with the contemporary sounds of modern musical technology. The band’s creator Kevin Parker, a multi-instrumentalist records all of their albums on his own and describes the process as, “jamming with yourself in the fourth dimension.” Tame Impala were first recognized by the world at large in 2010 with the release of their debut album Innerspeaker. By this time Parker had already began working on their second album Lonerism, which was released in October 2012. Lonerism differs from Innerspeaker as far as song structure and sounds with its poppier hooks and added synthesizers. The music is more orchestrated and densely woven. If reverberation fills your eardrums without the aid of something the dude next to you in the crowd who’s shirtless under a necktie and a leather vest passed you with a wink through his glow stick frames, then mission accomplished for Parker and his band.

The Tame Impala live experience is eerily close to the Tame Impala record experience. A fusion of organic sounds and interesting excursions through late-60s psychedelia to the hazy warmth of the Stone Roses, in an expansive and airy display of encompassing control.
