Steve Earle is a diverse singer/songwriter who has won three Grammy Awards and released over fourteen studio albums in the past twenty-five years. Earle first broke through with his album Guitar Town in 1986, whose title track reached as high as number seven on the country singles charts and was labeled number 482 on Rolling Stone magazine’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Earle’s strength as an artist is his writing. Earle’s songs have been recorded by the likes of The Pretenders, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and Percy Sledge, among others. Earle’s writing prowess is not limited to song lyrics, however; in 2011 he published a novel, Never Get Out of This World Alive, and also wrote an off-Broadway play about the execution of Karla Faye Tucker.
Earle’s songs have been featured in many films, including P.S. I Love You, and various TV shows like Friday Night Lights and The Wire. Earle had a semi-regular acting role as a recovering drug addict and counselor on The Wire and also played a drug dealer in the 2009 movie Leaves of Grass.
