Starfucker Bio

Starfucker

Indie pop/electronica band Starfucker, which has gone through the names PYRAMID and Pyramidd and sometimes still tours under the more-marquee-friendly STRFKR, started up in Portland, Oregon, in 2007. Members Joshua Hodges, Shawn Glassford, Keil Corcoran, and Patrick Morris are all multi-instrumentalists, taking on various vocal, guitar, drum, and keyboard duties. The band has stuck by its irreverent hipster aesthetic but has reached mainstream success, most notably through the use of its music in advertising. “Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second” backed a Target TV ad while their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” appeared in a Juicy Couture ad directed by Terry Richardson. Starfucker’s music has also appeared in TV shows such as Weeds and Skins. The band strives to make danceable songs that appeal to those looking for more inventive music. Dashes of whimsy include the frequent use of samples of spoken-word lectures from psychedelic 60s philosopher Alan Watts.

Agreed, but just watch the video right above here for "Rawnald..." I also would recommend Islands (and The Unicorns before that) as similar, fun, kooky artists to check out along with YACHT.

I'm not huge on electronic music, but I'm pretty huge on Starfucker. Even though it sounds like electronica, I'd definitely say the "indie rock" tag is accurate. They use a synthesizer, but it's a complete, live band. The music is pretty pop -- super upbeat and seemingly never trying too hard to be edgy. I first saw them at Outside Lands, where there were going by STRFKR. It was outdoors, in the daylight, at a huge festival, on a beautiful day, so everyone just seemed really happy to be there. If you haven't heard their music yet, I'd look for their song "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second" on YouTube. The name is ridiculous, but the music video is super cute and matches up perfectly. If you end up liking it, I'd recommend checking out the band Yacht, too.
