Silversun Pickups Bio

Silversun Pickups

Alternative rock band Silversun Pickups was formed in 2002 in the Silver Lake music scene of Los Angeles. Its style integrates indie rock and shoegaze, with an emphasis on distorted guitar sounds.

Following the release of its EP Pikul in 2005, Silversun Pickups released Carnavas (2006), which features the singles "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles." This album reached moderate commercial success.

Swoon (2009), which includes "Panic Switch," marked the peak of the band's career up to that point and earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. As new passengers on the fame train, Silversun Pickups toured with Placebo, Manchester Orchestra, and Muse.

In 2012, Neck of the Woods allowed the band to playfully experiment with psychedelic sounds more than they had on previous albums. Featuring the singles "Mean Spirits" and "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)," this album illuminates the struggle of growing up while also maintaining a bridge between the past and the present.

Loved Silversun Pickups since I first heard them around when "Lazy Eye" came out. I think a big reason I was drawn to their music was because my favorite alternative band growing up was the Smashing Pumpkins, and Silversun Pickups definitely draw a comparison to the Pumpkins in terms of their sound. They are a modern-day shoegaze resurrection whose use of fuzz guitars and atmosphere brings to mind some of the genre's noteworthy groups from the 90s, except Silversun Pickups have a harder, more uptempo edge. I'll admit it took a little while to get used to singer Brian Aubert's vocals, which are probably the most androgynous I've ever heard, but once I realized it didn't matter whether a nasal guy or a husky girl was singing, it was easy to enjoy the Pickups' music. As with many bands, their first LP is their best effort thus far, so for the most ideal introduction to the band, pick up 2006's Carnavas.

Well..What can you say about this band! They are an awesome alternative rock band. I have been following them since their "Caravans" album. I actually stumbled upon them while playing Rock Band on PS3. Their song "Lazy Eye" is featured in the game. From then on, I have been actively following them. They are a local Los Angeles band but now they have kind of become main stream. Some of my favorite songs are "Well Thought out Twinkles", "Panic Switch" and "Bloody Mary" Just in case you are wondering what you are going to expect from listening to them, there is quite a bit of heavy music in here accompanied by occasional incoherent screaming (either that or I forgot English Language)! Here is a useful tidbit: They picked up the name for the band from a local liquor store in Silver Lake called Silversun Pickup. Awwww...Ain't that sweet? Probably thanking the store for all the booze, cigs and credit they got before they made it big. Remind me to name my son Melrose Liquor Store!
