When I was advised to ‘check out’ Selah Sue at a German festival last year, I the advice and found myself a spot in the beaming sunlight. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but the growing crowds could only suggest I was in for something special. And I certainly was. Taken in immediately by a combination of reggae, soul and funk it was refreshing to hear a female voice which moved away from the indistinguishable sounds of many chart holding women artists. The crowd instantly went crazy for this little women with a big voice, further confirming her large fan base in Germany, as each song was greeted with the same enthusiastic response. Bouncy drum beats and reggae rhythms filled the arena, and I was certainly a happy chappy; if not surprised that this was the first time I had even heard of the name Selah Sue. So once I got home I did my research and downloaded the album. And she really is massive, fan base speaking. I’m still not quite sure how this Belgian singer managed to slip through my radar! But the album. What a little beauty. Its fantastic. And it’s fair to say that it wasn’t the large amounts of German beer which inspired my fondness of this music. With plucky guitar riffs, jazzy sound and a proper ‘finger clickin’ rhythm, I’ve become a bit obsessed with her Album ‘Raggamuffin’ (2011). Her husky-esque voice, in a classic reggae style, (think the female version of Skindred’s Benji Webbe) only brings a fuller beat and movement to the music; a personal favourite has to be ‘Crazy Vibes.'
