Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis in 1958, Prince has become one of the most successful R&B artists in music history. A man of many names, Prince is also referred to as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, Joey Coco, and a symbol called “love symbol #2,” which resembles the alchemic symbol for soapstone with a circle on top.
While Prince started his professional music career in 1976, it wasn’t until 1978 that he truly broke onto the scene with the release of the single “Soft and Wet,” which reached #92 on the Billboard Top 100. Prince never looked back from that point, going on to release an amazing fifty additional singles that charted in Billboard’s Top 100. Prince’s singles “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” “Batdance,” and “Cream” all achieved the title of #1 song in the United States.
Out of Prince’s thirty studio and soundtrack albums, four charted at #1 on the Billboard chart while twelve received at least platinum certifications, with Purple Rain reaching an insane level of 13x platinum. Prince has sold over a hundred million records worldwide, putting him in an elite company of musicians.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Prince has been involved in many legal struggles and lawsuits, along with contentious public displays, none more famous than appearing in public during a lawsuit with the word “slave” written on his face. This unpredictability and uninhibited behavior is one of the reasons his live shows are so highly regarded as not only musically amazing but also just fun and exciting. Tickets to Prince concerts are generally very expensive and not easy to come by.
