What are we, each one of us, within the vastness of the universe? What indeed but mere dots, little people that individually do not contribute in any way to the course of history, to each turn the earth gives? And if we are so insignificant, if our passage through life is, as it undoubtedly is, ephemeral, what’s left to do but to live every second with all the intensity it deserves and be as happy as the circumstances let us be? That's part of the philosophy that Nada Surf seems to embrace in their new album, The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy.
Nada Surf is one of those bands that does not let the passage of time affect them in their efforts to be positive. In spite of Reality. Call it naiveté or call it tenacity. In my utter ignorance of what’s gonna happen to me in the next hour and a half, I’ll call it intelligence. And maybe one will not fall off the chair while listening to this record for the first time. Maybe the listener will manage to listen to the entire thing without even blinking once. Because, thank goodness, in this album, there’s not one single track like Popular.
The Stars ... might not be band’s most outstanding work, but is honest and straightforward. Impeccably mature and impregnated, however, with an enviable youth. Simple and beautiful, unpretentious. Its songs speak of teenage dreams, love, heartache, hope and futures that reach us without notice, entrapping us in its present and making us wonder… How and when did I get here? But not with the bitterness of those who think that the past was better, but with the peace of mind of the those who feel that the best is yet to come.
@ChrisRRegan don't know coffee shops in LA, but that's funny. (otherwise hopeless) ted nugent apparently wanted to buy muzak to shelve it.
