Angela MoyerFeb 19, 2013This is an article I had written about Mick Mars, guitar player for Motley Crue:
There are many bands out there who are still touring or making records. For example; The Stones, Bon Jovi, Robert Plant and Black Sabbath. Some are still very popular with the public, and others not so popular anymore. Some have all of the original members and some do not. But, the band member I'm about to talk about is a very special man, who has been through it all. He represents a lot of band members that are still out there and doing what they love.
He walked on the stage with guitar in hand; hunched over like Quasimodo. He wonked out the first couple chords to "Live Wire" and scrunched his face like he had been cutting onions. Was the face he was making a face of pain or a face of getting into the music? In this case, it seems like it's both.
Mick Mars had been suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis since he was 19 years old. He says in the band's 2001 biography, "Ankylosing Spondilitis is a degenerative bone disease that I'm told is inherited, though I don't know of any relatives who have it. It usually affects the joints and ligaments that allow the spine to move, making them inflamed and stiff. It is as if hot, quick-drying cement is growing on the inside of your spine, becoming so heavy over the years that it starts to pull you down. People think that I walked hunched over because I'm shy, but it's because my spine is slowly forcing me down to the ground."
He had been touring with this painful disease since 1981 when the band joined. It seemed like the disease wasn't going to keep him from living the "rock n' roll" life. They were the most legendary rock band; paving the way for many heavy metal bands. The 80's quickly became the heavy metal decade with it's decadence and turbulance. For example; a typical night would consist of them doing drugs, playing their gig, scoring with chicks, doing more drugs, drinking any alcohol available, and causing total chaos. This was pretty much everynight for these guys.
For Mick, his look changed over the years more than anyone in the band. In 1981, he looked like a normal guy. By 1987, he was so bloated from all the alcohol. His band mate says, "When we saw Mick again, it looked like someone had sewn his head onto the body of a Samoan wrestler: his arms and neck were so bloated we worried he wouldn't be able to reach his guitar frets." In 1994, is when the disease started to show; he was sober and had lost some weight. In 2001, when they recorded the New Tattoo album, he was very skeleton like. In 2004, when the band reunited for about the hundredth time, he was only 98 lbs. The doctor had informed him that if he doesn't check himself into a hospital, he would die.
In 2003, a promoter in England had taken a poll to see what bands the public wanted to see on tour again. Everywhere he went; from England to Germany to France to Italy - everyone said they wanted to see Motley Crue. The people at 10th Street Entertainment attempted to contact each of them, but they were a little hesitant about this. Especially since Vince and Tommy can't stand eachother and Mick was nowhere to be found.
By September of 2004, everyone was on board; even Mick. But in order for this reunion to happen, he had to undergo a hip replacement; just like Paul Stanely of Kiss had to. While he had his surgery, Nikki, Tommy and Vince went into the studio to record new material for an anthology album; which would come out in February to promote this up coming tour. Bob Rock played Mick's parts on the 3 new songs.
Finally he was released from the hospital and didn't look anything like he used to; his hair was shorter, his face was very pale and he walked very slow with the aid of a cane. Usually when people have a hip replacement, they cannot walk anymore. For Mick, he could and he didn't care if he could walk or talk; as long as he could play his guitar.
Now, that is dedication and he really loves what he does. He isn't in it for the money. He continues to play rock n' roll no matter what happens. That is why Mick represents a lot of the guys in these bands today. Most of them are still doing it because they love it. A lot of the bands that came out of the 80's tanked because of the whole "Grunge" movement that took place in the 90's. But the ones who stuck to what they believed still sold records. So, I leave you with a quote from Mr. Mick Mars, "If I had to take off all the make-up, and shave my head and only wear a jockstrap; I would still be playing the same music."
One could call bacon and cheese kindred spirits. Though the two don’t always go together, they’re often spotted in the same places – burgers, sandwiches, breakfast, etc. The two
