skylar.hardenbrookApr 8, 2013Mobb Deep have quite a varied career in my opinion. On the one hand, you have their undisputed classic output, the essential 90s album The Infamous, and some of the most praised tracks of all time ("Shook Ones Part II"), and more generally, a few years of the 90s where the group dropped landmark dark street rap. However, then their careers generally took a turn for commercial. The sound cleaned up, the music became hook-centric, and the collaborations with R&B/pop artists grew in number. Basically throughout the entire 2000s decade, everything Mobb Deep put out was criticized by longtime fans who knew what the group was capable of. This period culminated with the group signing to 50 Cent's G-Unit label, a decision which many people didn't agree with, and it showed how much the group had changed, or "sold out". Fortunately, after one album it seems like the group woke up a little, and today they're off G-Unit and seem to be working again with quality producers. I may be biased by Mobb Deep's early work, but I think it's clear the group was influenced by commercial appeal and it's hard not to make comparisons between what they used to make and what their later career brought. Despite some internal conflicts recently, as of now, Havoc and Prodigy are still planning to record and tour together.
