Martin Sexton was born the tenth of twelve children in a working-class Irish-American family from Syracuse, New York. He began playing acoustic guitar at the age of fourteen. Since he found it hard to relate to the popular songs of the 1980s – the era he grew up in – Sexton began writing and playing both original and cover songs inspired by classic rock and roll. Sexton eventually moved to Boston and built a fan base by playing his songs for money on the streets of Cambridge.
After recording his own first album, Journey, in his friend’s attic, Sexton sold 20,000 copies of it out of his guitar case in Cambridge. Since then, Sexton has released more than five studio albums and has been lauded by critics as a raw, expansive talent. John Mayer called Sexton “the best live performer” he has ever seen, and Martin Sexton performances are widely considered the best bang-for-your-buck tickets in town.
Sexton has received more popular attention since his songs have been featured in mainstream TV shows like Scrubs, Brotherhood, and Parenthood. Sexton’s 2007 album release Seeds debuted at number six on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.
