dresstocycleFeb 19, 2013Originally published 29th April, 2011. This past Saturday, one of Sweden’s leading artists in the contemporary music scene – Lykke Li – came to Amsterdam. She gave a concert at Paradiso, as part of her European tour promoting her new CD, Wounded Rhythms. Her debut album Youth Novels, released in 2008, was a success and defined Lykke Li as an indie singer with influences of pop, electronic and folk music, recognized for distinguishable soft voice, powerful and simple at the same time lyrics and well-constructed image.
A sold out show, with a full venue, lights on, smoke that filled the stage, long, black fabrics hanging from the ceilings, as the intro begins, and the band walks in. Lykke Li in black make-up, short blond hair in a straight cut, black lycra tights and a large black coat proved quite a contrast to her former punk rock teen look.
After playing couple of peaceful songs, her famous’I am Good, I am Gone’ was played. Additional tracks followed, as her connection to her audience was undeniable. Yet, it was not until Li’s ‘I Follow River’ from her new album, that the whole crowd sang along. During ‘Dance Dance Dance,’ as usual, Li with one drumstick in her hand playing alongside the drummer, took the harmonica in her other hand began to play it.
Along with the aid of Paradiso’s extremely tall ceilings, big open stage, breath-taking lights, Li’s own remarkable stage prescence accompanied by smooth movements, and her ability to connect with the audience, the concert proved to be one of the ‘must see’ shows of the year.
