Lisa Loeb is an American singer-songwriter and actress. Born in 1968 and raised in Dallas, Texas, Loeb launched her music career in 1994 with the song “Stay (I Missed You).” She became the first artist in the United States to have a chart-topping single without being signed to a record label.
Lisa Loeb attended Brown University and began her first musical endeavor with her friend Elizabeth Mitchell. She went to Berklee School of Music for a summer, after which she founded a band called Nine Stories. The band recorded a cassette that included the song “Stay (I Missed You).” The song became a hit after Loeb shared it with Ethan Hawke, who in turn shared it with director Ben Stiller, who decided to use the track in his movie Reality Bites.
Lisa Loeb’s music is mellow and often acoustic, and has a comfortable coffee-shop vibe. She has released ten studio albums, including two children’s albums. Loeb has also made several media appearances, both on TV and in films, and tours occasionally, either as an introductory act or as a headliner at small venues.
