Kool & The Gang – one of the most diverse musical groups in the past fifty years – was formed as a jazz band in the mid-60s, became a funk legend in the 70s, and transformed into an influential R&B in the 80s. Throughout the years, Kool & The Gang performances, whether live or recorded, still rely heavily on the jazz foundation the group was built on, but always manage to incorporate fresh, new contemporary sounds.
The band didn’t achieve mainstream success until the release of its sixth studio album, Wild and Peaceful, in 1973; the record featured Kool & The Gang’s first Top 40 hit, “Funky Stuff,” and included Top Ten singles “Hollywood Swinging” and “Jungle Boogie.”
Kool & The Gang would have trouble finding success to equal Peaceful until it won a Grammy Award for the song “Open Sesame,” which was featured on the hit movie Saturday Night Fever, in 1976. After its Grammy win, the group realized it needed to adapt to the disco trend, so Kool & The Gang added two new singers, Earl Toon, Jr. and James “J.T.” Taylor, who played crucial roles on the commercial and critical triumph of 1980’s single, “Celebration.”
Don’t get forget to buy your tickets to Kool & The Gang whenever they become available because they’re sure to sell out as soon as they go on sale.
