Kool & The Gang Bio

Kool & The Gang – one of the most diverse musical groups in the past fifty years – was formed as a jazz band in the mid-60s, became a funk legend in the 70s, and transformed into an influential R&B in the 80s. Throughout the years, Kool & The Gang performances, whether live or recorded, still rely heavily on the jazz foundation the group was built on, but always manage to incorporate fresh, new contemporary sounds.

The band didn’t achieve mainstream success until the release of its sixth studio album, Wild and Peaceful, in 1973; the record featured Kool & The Gang’s first Top 40 hit, “Funky Stuff,” and included Top Ten singles “Hollywood Swinging” and “Jungle Boogie.”

Kool & The Gang would have trouble finding success to equal Peaceful until it won a Grammy Award for the song “Open Sesame,” which was featured on the hit movie Saturday Night Fever, in 1976. After its Grammy win, the group realized it needed to adapt to the disco trend, so Kool & The Gang added two new singers, Earl Toon, Jr. and James “J.T.” Taylor, who played crucial roles on the commercial and critical triumph of 1980’s single, “Celebration.”

These guys have had an incredible career! I'm most familiar with them from their classic albums of the early 70s, which are a staple in any funk fan's collection. Kool & The Gang were among the first groups to successfully merge jazz and funk, and there are numerous tracks off the group's first 8 or so LPs that are legendary simply because of how often they were sampled, drum breaks and open melodies galore. Kool & The Gang were definitely highly influential in hip-hop for that reason. Yet, this doesn't even really touch on what really made these guys such a huge band, and that was their transition to the late 70s disco and 80s R&B with tunes everyone knows even today such as "Celebration", "Get Down On It", and "Ladies Night". As a whole, Kool & The Gang have had a very diverse and prolific career, and it's great they are still around performing to bring their music to new audiences.
