Born in Gilmer, Texas on September 30, 1935, John Royce “Johnny” Mathis is a legendary pop and soul singer whose smooth vibes have captivated fans for decades. Growing up in the melting pot of San Francisco, Mathis developed a love for piano music when his father bought an old piano for just $25. At age 13, Mathis began taking voice lessons with teacher, Connie Cox, and began performing around California’s Bay Area.
During a jam session at popular jazz venue Black Hawk Club in San Francisco, Mathis was approached by Helen Noga who became his musical manager. Noga then contacted jazz producer George Avakian who came to see Mathis play and immediately signed him to Columbia Records. His first record, Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Poplar Culture, was not overly successful and he began to work on another album with Columbia records.
Over the course of his long and decorated career, Mathis has released over 60 albums, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and has had three different singles inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
