Johnny Mathis Bio

Johnny Mathis

Born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935, John Royce “Johnny” Mathis is a legendary pop and soul singer whose smooth vibes have captivated fans for decades. Growing up in the melting pot of San Francisco, Mathis developed a love for piano music when his father bought an old piano for just $25. At age thirteen, Mathis began taking voice lessons with teacher Connie Cox and began performing around California’s Bay Area.

During a jam session at popular jazz venue Black Hawk Club in San Francisco, Mathis was approached by Helen Noga, who became his music manager. Noga then contacted jazz producer George Avakian, who came to see Mathis play and immediately signed him to Columbia Records. His first record, Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Culture, was not overly successful, so he soon began work on another album with Columbia Records.

Over the course of his long and decorated career, Mathis has released over sixty albums, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and has had three singles inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Mathis’ exceptional career and unparalleled talent ensures the amazement of all audience members, so look for Johnny Mathis tour dates soon!
