Hymn 101 is such a good song that as soon as I heard it on a Paste Magazine sampler record I immediately set out to learn everything I could about Joe Pug. At the time, that was not much he barely had an EP out having recently left college at UNC and moved to Chicago to pursue music. But here is the coolest thing, he only had a few songs recorded but if you sent him your mailing address he would send you several CD samplers with a few songs to give to friends. Those grassroots efforts helped build a small and growing following for Joe Pug and he has started to get some critical acclaim as a great songwriter. Hymn 101 remains his best song to me, but he recently released his second full-length album and now has a catalog of great songs filled with little lyrical nuggets of gold. He deals with themes from love, to war, to family, to philosophical, to introspective as he wanders around the genres of folk, americana, alt country, and others. Also cool about Joe Pug, early on in Chicago he had fans apply for an "Apartment Concert". Leading up to a concert that night he performed 4 30minute shows at people apartments for them and their friends and just drove around town in his fan. How cool is that? I regret being out of town that weekend. I have seen him live now 2 times, twice in Chicago to some good size crowds (as in a few hundred) and twice in LA to much smaller but growing crowds. He always puts on a good show and genuinely loves playing his music for people. At the merch booth after the show he is very friendly and talkative with fans. I'm hoping for a long a productive career from Joe and years of great songs.
