David NazarioJan 23, 2013Combining her many talents, Jill Scott performed at the legendary Hammerstein Grand Ballroom as a part of VH1′s storytellers series. The actress, poet and amazing vocalist donned different outfits (and wigs) throughouhout the night to help her bring her oftentimes personal songs to life. Starting the show off with her early hit, “Getting In The Way”, Scott rocked a red wig and major attitude portraying the character she sings about in the song.
Backed by a live band and three back up singers, Jill also made it a point to give the audience some background info about the songs and answer a few questions. Throughout the night Jill also spoke about what songwriting means to her and what her songwriting process is. “Being honest to write a song, you can’t care if anyone likes it or hears it because it is mandatory that you get it out,” explains Jill. And get it out she did, in English and in Spanish. After blowing the crowd away with “Is It The Way You Love Me”, Jill performed a slowed down version of “He Loves Me” that included lyrics in Spanish and an opera esque ending that brought the crowd to their feet with applause.
According to Ms. Scott, “it takes a lot of women to make up one woman” Fortunately for us, Jill was able to creatively use wardrobe and styling (and some pretty seasoned acting chops) to portray all of these different sides of herself.
