Musically, Jay-Z is a hit or miss for me -- being a fan of primarily 90s hip-hop, the only album I can fully get into by him is his debut, Reasonable Doubt, but he does have some great singles since then, up to and including the Black Album in my opinion. Nevertheless, you can't help but admire Jay-Z's business sense and his drive to get him to the globally dominant status he has now over media and music. From his earliest days simply as a supporting rapper for others, to creating his own label imprint Roc-A-Fella in order to market his material... to numerous albums later, collaborations, business ventures, endorsements, and his powerhouse couple with Beyonce... Jay-Z is truly the model figure for earned success in the entertainment industry, and I don't doubt his influence and power will continue far into the future.

I saw Jay-Z at Pauley Pavilion as well!! Was lucky enough to get free tickets last minute and damn was I impressed. I was high up above him and all the way on one side but actually really enjoyed seeing him at that angle; I'm really short so it's helpful. He is really such a boss; the way he carries himself and wears sunglasses onstage, the way his vocal inflections are still present and sound just like on his tracks live (rather than yelling like many rappers do), and the fact that he actually IS a boss/businessman combine to make his live performance really believable and affecting. The Rock Docs that shows most of his live performance at Madison Square Garden interspersed with clips of him in the studio is frickin sweet. The part where he hears the beat for Dirt Off Your Shoulder (one of my favorites) for the first time after hearing a bunch of different beats in a row is so cute; he gets really excited suddenly because he just knows it's a hit. I was also lucky enough to see a presentation by the president of EMI Music Publishing, Jon Platt, in a class at UCLA, and he's really good friends with Jay-Z. He told a lot of stories about him but my favorite anecdote was that about him coming up with Empire State of Mind and getting together with Alicia and his reactions etc.... he really is an awesome dude.

Oh and he is great live. Saw him at Pauley Pavilion at UCLA and he kept the crowd on their feet the entire time. Never thrown so many roc signs in the air.

Jay-Z is awesome, not just as a rapper but just as a person. His whole persona. Sure, in some ways it is carefully crafted, but in some ways that is a perfect reflection of who he is. Whether or not he just steps in the booth with no lyrics written down and bangs it out in one take, his music is consistently good. He always gets great beats, these days he can afford to get the best producers whenever he wants. His early stuff was raw and real, and his newer stuff is less raw but just as real. He may talk about being the best and having money in half of his songs and reference his drug dealing past in most of his songs but he manages to do it in an original manner each time. And that's part of rap, it grew out of boasting and battling and one-upmanship and he continuously one-ups both in and out of the studio. "You coulda been anywhere in the world, but you're here with me. I appreciate that...let's rock"
