Nuria CastanyNov 22, 2012I usually don´t check every day the gigs upcoming to Berlin because it’s painful when you can’ t pay the price that they cost. And when you now that something huge it’s going on and you can’t be there, that makes you feel as a dickhead. Whatever, when I read that Godspeed You Black emperor was going to play in our lovely city I went mad! I knew about it the day before the concert and off course all the tickets were sold out! I started to think about what to do. Go directly to the doors of the place and try to go in, travel to Dresden because there it was not yet sold out, put one of his albums on my laptop and hear it extremely lout. This last option depressed me even more. Finally I found a resale ticket on Internet and for the same price. I had some offers in Ebay of people who where selling the tickets for 60 €, double price! Fucking bastards! Finally I was going to go to the concert, I was so excited and expectant to assist to one of the best post rock shows ever.
It took place in SO36, the first band Big Eater played with not to much success. Their style would be perfect to open a creepy garage rock show, but not for a special night of heavy sounds and dramatic melodies. There was no feedback between the band and the audience. The lead singer notice what was going on, it was so obvious, and gave a message to the assistance: “You think that we are weirds but we are sincere and you are cynics”. Ok man! It was the funniest moment during their concert; well actually it was the only funny moment. That’s it.
Finally they finished the concert, should I say with more pain than glory. Anyway the big great moment just arrived! Lights out, projections ready, hearts in our hands and “Hope Drone” starting the amazing storm which take us to an unknown planet during the next two and a half hours. The heavy perfect sounds and the darkness came, the mix of the anxiety that we were all feeling with the projections about eternal roads, trains to nowhere, black birds planning or just messages like HOPE where bombing our head.
I am using the expression “ours” because I wasn’t alone, I saw the faces of the people there. All of us were becoming insane as the Scream’s paint, really, all of the presents were together with this feelings but at the same time alone with the goodness and the pain, with the isolation and the shadows of this sad world. Then came “Death Metheny”, “World Police and friendly fire”, “The helicopters sing”. And they keep going on and on. At this point no one blink, the eternity was there, in front of us, stroking us. The time went by and the show finished. They just disappear one by one from the stage, without any words, without any presentation of the members of the band, they took with them their melodies and left. They didn’t need to do any speech, because they were talking to us since the first moment that they appear, just with the instruments they transmit more than you can express with words. It was more than words, more than a show. It was an introspective music ritual and no one was immune to feel it.
Class!
One could call bacon and cheese kindred spirits. Though the two don’t always go together, they’re often spotted in the same places – burgers, sandwiches, breakfast, etc. The two
