Chris MorganAug 17, 2012Gillian Welch has one of the most distinct voices in music. Instantly recognizable whether she appears with The Decemberists, Ryan Adams, or anyone else. It is a voice that is tough to describe, and not traditionally beautiful, but it is captivating. She broke on the scene with the "O Brother, Where art thou?" soundtrack but has a solid discography under her belt, Time and Revival being my favorites.
Gillian had an amazing live set with Ryan Adams at the Exit/In in Nashville that was heavily bootlegged and captures the two of them at a great moment. Welch collaborates heavily with David Rawlings and also with others in that alt-country/americana world like Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Lucinda Williams. Gillian Welch carries on the tradition of some of these older singer-songwriters with an ability to paint stark, harrowing images through her lyrics and voice.
