Gilbert Gottfried – probably best known for his voice performance as the wisecracking parrot in the Disney classic Aladdin – started doing stand-up comedy as a fifteen-year-old in New York City. Saturday Night Live would notice Gottfried’s talent and bring him on as a cast member a few years later, and MTV hired the comedian to do a series of funny, improvised promotions for the newly formed channel. Gottfried would soon after appear on Late Night With David Letterman and The Cosby Show.
Gottfried’s continued stand-up success and newfound celebrity as a TV guest star led to bit roles in various movies, including Beverly Hills Cop II, Problem Child, Look Who’s Talking Too, and How to Be a Player.
Rubber Balls and Liquor – Gottfried’s 2011 memoir – is a twisted social commentary that chronicles the comedian’s rise to fame. Gottfried is a regular on The Howard Stern Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Gottfried continues to churn out topical comedy, recently reading a section of the sexual novel Fifty Shades of Grey on a YouTube video with his trademark squawky voice.
