Flying Lotus

Born in Los Angeles in 1983 as Steven Ellison, Flying Lotus is first and foremost an electronic music producer who also dabbles in rap. Commonly referred to as FlyLo when he is playing his electronic beats, Steven Ellison uses the moniker Captain Murphy when he raps, creating multiple music personalities within the same person. Although Flying Lotus started his music career in 2000, he did not sign on a label until 2007, the year after releasing his debut album, 1983.

Since the release of 1983, Flying Lotus has released three albums, two of which were in the Top 20 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart. In addition to his albums, Flying Lotus has released numerous EPs, mixtapes, remixes, and singles, many of which received much critical acclaim. In 2011, Flying Lotus won two awards at the Independent Music Awards, one for his album Cosmogramma and one for his video for “MmmHmm.”

Flying Lotus live shows are typically an electronic dance party with the occasional rap mixed in, making the shows unpredictable and exciting. Tickets to Flying Lotus shows are generally inexpensive and fairly easy to find.
