Eric Clapton Bio

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton was born in England on March 30, 1945 to Patricia Clapton, who was just 16 at the time, and Edward Fryer, who was a soldier and sent to war just before Eric’s birth. Clapton was raised by his grandmother and her second husband and actually though that his mother was his older sister. Clapton’s musical passion grew when he received a Hoyer guitar from his mother, who had moved to Germany when she remarried and left Eric in England. Clapton’s current blues and rock style was influenced by the first band he joined at the ripe age of 17, The Roosters.

After touring with a number of blues and rock bands, including The Bluesbreakers, Clapton was invited by drummer Ginger Baker to form a new band, called Cream. In joining Cream, Clapton’s reputation as a one of Britain’s top guitarists grew and the band became a commercial success, hitting top charts in the UK and the United States. Clapton’s record of awards indicates that he is one of the most influential guitarists of all time, which include being the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ranked as second in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and fourth in Gibson’s Top 50 Guitarists of All Time. Clapton is a guitar god and a living legend of music, plain and simple. He's one of those undeniable talents who not only has complete mastery over his instrument, but also has a remarkably impressive and influential discography -- the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominos, solo career... taken alone, being a member of any of those bands would be impressive, but to have had a role in all of them, not to mention a crucial one, is amazing and commands Clapton the greatest respect as a musician. He's one of the surviving icons of 60s rock that I'm very glad is still with us, and any time he performs live, I'd definitely seek it out just for seeing a legend at work.
