Brett Horton Apr 12, 2013 THROWING DR. DOG A BONE A handful of years ago, my friend sent me a CD in the mail for my birthday, and he said I was going to love it. I unwrapped the package, and I saw the lo-fi, bare bones cover artwork of Dr. Dog's seminal album, Easy Beat, staring back up at me. What in the world ever possessed them to call themselves Dr. Dog? I wondered. It made me think of a band name my friends' and I once used as a joke to see how bad of a name we could get away with. We called ourselves Rock Party and suddenly found ourselves being booked left and right until we eventually changed it. We'd look at the advertisement banners and roll in self-mocking hysterical laughter. I thought maybe this was the same kind of thing, except they just continued to roll with it. However, it's often the being that comes to define the name, and shouldn't be the other way around, unless, of course, you're the Boy Named Sue. Going back to what my friend said, he was right, I loved it, and I love the name, too. I searched the cover artwork and saw they're from an obscure label named Park The Van records based out of Pennsylvania. I had a lead they were from somewhere around the Philadelphia area and further investigation informed me they were from West Grove, Pennsylvania. I have their 12" vinyl, We All Belong, and upon inspecting it, I noticed there were no credits to any of the band members, nor a single picture. Humble dudes. Or maybe self-righteous in their elusiveness, who knows. Or they just all blend together into the single entity that is Dr. Dog. So they've become one of my favorite bands of the past several years, and I am still in the process of discovering their discography. That's because the few I've heard make such good listening, I just want to savor them for a while before I move on. I realized that I didn't even know any of their names or what any of them looked like. The only time I saw them play, I believe, they were wearing masks. I just knew their sound. A mellifluous barking of lead vocals trailed by back-up harmonies doggie-paddling in the tidal wave of 1960's- influenced modern day indie-rock. That is, until yesterday. I saw their video to "Shadow People," and it was the most candid I'd seen them. (OK, so the beginning of that sounds like The Flaming Lips' "She Don't Use Jelly." Keep in mind, the Flaming Lips' "Fight Test" sounds a lot like Cat Stevens' "Father and Son." No one's perfect, and it's just music which is symbiotic, in the end. Check out the album, We All Belong, for some pure Dr. Dog gold) One of the lead singers reminds me of a crossbreed between Beck and Paul Simon in looks, with the spirit of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, but you can't be too sure.
