Troy Beetles – known professionally as Datsik – is a Canadian dubstep producer who burst onto the music scene in 2009. Datsik started his career writing tracks that would never be heard by anyone, but quickly changed his career trajectory after a chance meeting with fellow producer Excision at the Shambhala Music Festival in 2008. Datsik and Excision would soon team up and release successful dubstep tracks like 2009’s “Swagga.”
When Datsik was first starting out, he was inspired and influenced by the flourishing dubstep scene in the U.S. He considers the music he produces “robostep” – a mix of hard-hitting drum patterns, futuristic synth lines, and growling basslines. In 2012, Datsik released his debut album, Vitamin D, which featured performances by Downlink, Infected Mushroom, and Z-Trip. Also in 2012, Datsik founded his own record label, Firepower Records, and immediately signed a slew of dubstep producers including Barron, DKS, Getter, Delta Heavy, The Frim, and many others.
Datsik has remixed music from a variety or artists including Linkin Park, Lil’ Wayne, Coldplay, and Wu-Tang Clan and has performed with artists like Nero and Steve Aoki.
