D'Angelo Bio

D’Angelo is the stage name of Michael Eugene Archer, who was born in 1974 in Richmond, Virginia. The R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and producer signed with EMI records after impressing executives with his demo tape. After writing the song “U Will Know” for the Jason’s Lyric soundtrack, he recorded his debut album, Brown Sugar. The album went platinum, and its single “Lady” was a Billboard top-ten hit. Despite his quick success, D’Angelo took some time off from recording, choosing instead to work with other neo-soul artists, most notably appearing on Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In 2000, his much-anticipated album Voodoo debuted at Billboard’s #1 and won D’Angelo two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” became perhaps his best-known song, due in part to an innovative video featuring D’Angelo singing nude. With other artists including Questlove from The Roots, he embarked on the popular Voodoo Tour as a group act called the Soultronics. Since then D’Angelo has lain low, mostly only working with others, but he still tours internationally.
