Dan Deacon Bio

Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon is arguably the most influential electronic musician and composer in Baltimore, Maryland and is known for his ridiculously energetic and entertaining live shows. Deacon attended Purchase College in New York where he studied electro-acoustic and computer music composition and gained attention for his CD releases of his work.

Deacon has released over ten studio albums, including 2012’s America, which reached number five on both the U.S. Top Heatseekers and Electronic Albums charts and cracked the US Billboard 200 when it hit number 147. The album exemplifies the complexity and thoughtfulness of Deacon’s art and showcases his ability to put his own stamp on electronic music.

In 2011, Deacon scored the horror film Twixt by famous director Francis Ford Coppola, which starred Val Kilmer and was released at the Toronto Film Festival. Deacon gained more admirers of his work and once again showed that his composing skills matched his knowledge of the electronica genre.

Regardless of the type of music you enjoy, you will enjoy the Dan Deacon experience. You'll be flailing your arms and jumping hysterically for the whole concert, and if you are lucky enough you will take part in a human spiral or dance off. Quite simply, there is no fair concert comparison. His music is often described as noise, but it is really well-developed electronic looping and beats. If you choose to drive around to his cd, it is practically guaranteed you will be smiling uncontrollably and quickly gain energy only three Parisian cafes can give you. Regardless of the childlike sounds and emotions his music can bring you, his lyrics (if you can make them out) fly out straight from his heart. The latest album America, was written after he spent time abroad, which lead him to appreciate his American core and write an entire album about it. "Melt down beside me I melt down beside you Always I melt with you" Simple and great, the albums well worth a listen. And if he ever comes to your town, be sure to buy tickets quick.

Dan Deacon is awesome. His music is electronic, which I am not into, but it is very different from the EDM sweeping the nation. In part because it is not really designed for dance. Sure you can rock out to it at a live show but it's almost better for cranking up and driving. I saw him at the Hideout Block Party in Chicago and he had the entire crowd form a human tunnel which he ran through and gave high fives. A picture from that (not me) is in his album art. He was on the mic during it, but that might not satisfy those who criticize DJs as just pressing play. Deacon is really a student of sound, I think he literally got a degree in it somewhere in Maryland. Check out this clip of him on his local news 6 years ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eMb_kh_glw). My favorite tracks are Snookered, Woof Woof, Wham City, and Crystal Cat. Just starting to check out the new album, but I highly recommend checking out Dan Deacon whether or not you are normally into electronic music.
