Damian Lazarus Bio

Damian Lazarus

Damian Lazarus was born in London, but relocated to Los Angeles in 2009. He was drawn to classic pop music as a child, and inherited from his grandfather an affection for show tunes. During his teens, Lazarus discovered hip-hop, electro, soul and funk. He then went on to explore house, hardcore, and jungle during his university years. This musical upbringing resulted in Lazarus’ innovative dance music stylings.

Lazarus got a big break in 2002 when he was invited to spin at Barcelona's Sonar Festival. By the next year, he had residencies at some of the best clubs in the world, like DC10 in Ibiza. He also founded Crosstown Rebels in 2003, signing cutting-edge electronic artists like Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Deniz Kurtel, and Art Department. Five years later, Lazarus had started his own radio show, Lazpod, a monthly excursion into weird and wonderful sounds.

The Damian Lazarus debut album, Smoke the Monster Out, was released in 2009. It features the DJ’s own vocals, along with musical influences ranging from Neil Diamond to Photek, and Bjork to Jeff Buckley. A live set to accompany the album was soon put together, and the Smoke the Monster Out tour was debuted at the 2009 SXSW festival.
