Cypress Hill Bio

Cypress Hill

Formed in South Gate, California in 1988, Cypress Hill is a three-man hip-hop group known for their rap and rock fusion, along with their laid back West Coast style. The group members, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs, and B-Real each have their own distinctive style of rap, which when combined has driven Cypress Hill from a neighborhood rap group to a three-time Grammy nominated hip-hop powerhouse. Determined to leave their mark outside the studio, Cypress Hill created the annual Smokeout Music Festival in Southern California that draws thousands of people each year.

Since their formation, Cypress Hill has released eight full studio albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top 100 chart, with their album Black Sunday making #1. Also, four of their albums have received at least Platinum certifications, with Cypress Hill going double Platinum and Black Sunday going triple Platinum. Cypress Hill has also had success for their dozens of singles they’ve released, most notably with their single “Insane in the Brain” which reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cypress Hill live shows are generally a blend of mellow and upbeat fun with the ever-entertaining trio rarely having an off day. Tickets to Cypress Hill concerts are usually fairly affordable and easy to find.

Cypress Hill have become a distinctive group for a number of reasons. The most obvious recognizable factor is probably the one-of-a-kind voice of B-Real, but for me the group has always stood out for taking an alternative stance to west coast production styles (referencing their earliest and most defining work). Largely due to the excellent production work of DJ Muggs, the group notoriously kept the hard drums and dusty samples more often associated with east coast hip-hop, and their music is definitely not typical west coast flavor -- most artists at that time were doing slicker G-funk and gangsta rap styles. Yet at the same time, Cypress was able to preserve the laidback feel of the west coast, so in a way their music sounds like a hybrid of coastal styles. The weed influence definitely permeates through their music in all aspects. The group has a rich discography, but their albums most worth checking out are their first few albums, which are prime examples of hip-hop from the genre's best era.
