The members of Cold War Kids first began playing their indie rock together in Fullerton, California in guitarist and vocalist Jonnie Russell’s apartment, above a restaurant called Mulberry Street; the band would later use the eatery’s name for their first EP.
The group released two more EPs – With Our Wallets Full and Up in Rags – before signing with Downtown Records in 2006. The band then went on tour for two straight years after their debut LP, Robbers & Cowards, dropped and gained attention in the blogosphere; Cold War Kids performances around the world began to build on the momentum of the group’s EPs and LP.
Loyalty to Loyalty, the Cold War Kids’ second album, was released in 2008 and featured more dark themes, narrative, and political commentary than any of their other releases, marking a turning point in the group’s creative process. However, the album features the same soulful, blues-influenced take on indie rock that is a trademark of Cold War Kids music.
The Cold War Kids have various influences – Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Billie Holiday, Nathan Willett, The Velvet Underground – that are apparent in their work and make their tunes appealing to a wide range of music lovers.
