Bret Michaels was born Bret Michael Sychak on March 15, 1963 in Butler, Pennsylvania. His love of music was cultivated as a teenager when he began playing guitar and formed a band with his childhood friends, called Paris. In 1984, the band moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a music career and changed their name to Poison. After gaining popularity in the LA underground circuit with their hard rock with a country music flair, Poison signed with Enigma Records to produce their first studio album, Look What the Cat Dragged In. The album eventually went platinum, however, at the same time, Michaels experienced a falling out with his love, Tracy Lewis, and the breakup inspired Michaels to write the song, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”
After his success with Poison, which recorded two more platinum albums after Look What the Cat Dragged In, Michaels went on to pursue a solo career and released A Letter from Death Row, his first solo album. While Michaels’ solo career was not as successful as Poison’s, he began to take up reality show gigs, including Nashville Star, Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It, Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, and many others.
