Black Star is a hip-hop duo composed of Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli, both products of New York’s underground hip-hop movement of the late 1990s. Their fame grew from an independent record label, also in New York, Rawkus Records, with the release of their first album, Mos Def & Taib Kweli Are Black Star. Black Star’s lyrics mirror social activism brought on by the deaths of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, which occurred as they wrote their album. In 2001, Black Star took their role in civic duty to a new level by performing “Money Jungle” for the compilation album, Red Hot + Indigo, which raised money for AIDS awareness. In 2011, the duo reunited after separating for successful solo careers to perform on the Colbert Report. Check out Black Star tour dates soon, as Black Star tickets will sell out fast!
