It's hard for me visualize the impact the Beastie Boys had when they blew up in the mid-80s, because I've always seen them as just the goofy alternative to many of the acts from that time, and their origins as a punk band don't add to the idea of how monumental the group was to hip-hop. But their effect on hip-hop was real, and without the Beastie Boys, who knows where the genre would have ended up. Adrock, MCA, and Mike D brought hip-hop out of the streets of New York and injected it into the suburbs to bring national attention to this "new" music, and also moved hip-hop beyond racial borders. And for me, also a kid from a suburban LA town, the Beastie Boys were the artists behind my first hip-hop album (Hello Nasty), so they have notable personal importance. Unfortunately, with MCA's passing last year, the Beastie Boys probably won't continue on, but their music and prolific output are timeless. It was surreal to hear MCA had died, because as artists' music stays with you for so long, you don't really imagine them aging with you simultaneously. He left us too early -- RIP MCA!
