Seattle has always been a hotbed of cutting-edge rock and roll, but usually of the gloomy and tortured kind. Perhaps that’s why Band of Horses relocated to Charleston, South Carolina – the group’s alternative country stylings were just too positive and sunny for the Emerald City.
Formed in 2004, the indie rock quintet gained interest by opening for other independent and alternative folk musicians like Iron & Wine, playing shows such as SXSW. This interested infamous Seattle label Sub Pop, known for bringing bands of the grunge explosion to the forefront. Soon after, Band of Horses was opening for acts as big as Kings of Leon.
With chill live shows and an agreeable down-home vibe that has fans flocking to its sound, Band of Horses’ music also finds its way onto some surprising playlists. The guitar line for hit single “The Funeral” was used as the beat behind the song “The Prayer” by alternative rapper Kid Cudi, displaying a revolutionary mixture of laid-back indie rock and modern hip-hop.
With its infectious classic rock atmosphere, introspective lyrics, and powerful sense of originality, Band of Horses continues to amaze, charm, and relax audiences the world over, paving the way for nontraditional musicians still chasing the underground dream.
