Formed in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland in 1992, Ash is an alternative rock band comprised of Tim Wheeler, Mark Hamilton, and Rick McMurray, with a stint by Charlotte Hatherley from 1998 to 2006.
The band started while Wheeler, Hamilton, and McMurray were in high school. Influenced by Nirvana, The Pixies, and Mudhoney, the three teens developed a punk pop sound that quickly gained popularity. Their first single, “Jack Names the Planets,” was picked up by BBC Radio One, and the band finally got their footing in the music world.
Since 1997, the band has released six albums. In 2007, Ash began the band's A to Z series, wherein Ash released a new single every two weeks, with a total of twenty-six songs released throughout the year.
Ash performances are reminiscent of underground punk-rock shows from the 90s. The band maintains a very 90s sound while being original with their lyrics and adding creative touches to their music as they continue to record and perform.
