Anoushka Shankar

Anoushka Shankar was born in London on June 9, 1981, but split her childhood between London and India. Shankar was born into a traditional Hindu family and she is also the half-sister of popular American singer Norah Jones. After high school, Shankar decided to pursue a musical path and began training with her father, a successful sitar player. At just 16, Shankar signed with Angel Records and released her first album, Anoushka, in 1998.

Shankar’s talent earned her a Grammy nomination for World Music in 2003 for her third album, Anourag, becoming the youngest-ever and first female to be nominated. This success lead to another Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary World Music for her fourth album, RISE, in 2005. In 2006, Shankar became the first Indian to play at the Grammys. Shankar went on to release three other albums after RISE and added another award to her collection for Best Artist at the Songlines Music Awards.
