Anamanaguchi Bio

Anamanaguchi

Anamanaguchi is an indie rock band from New York City that creates chiptune music, which is synthesized electronic music produced by the sound chips in vintage computers, video game counsels, and arcade machines. Consisting of lead songwriter and guitarist Peter Berkman, bassist James DeVito, guitarist Ary Warnaar, and drummer Luke Silas, the group formed in 2004. The band’s name is meant to resemble the gibberish of Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars.

With a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Game Boy, Anamanaguchi uses video game hardware from the mid-to-late 1980s for the group’s pop beats, which are also influenced by the likes of Weezer and The Beach Boys.

The debut Anamanaguchi album, Dawn Metropolis, was released in 2009. It features the song “Jetpack Blues, Sunset Hues,” which is the theme song for Chris Hardwick’s The Nerdiest Podcast.

Soon the band started working on music for the video game adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. The soundtrack for the game was released on Amazon and iTunes in August 2010, debuting at No. 3 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

Anamanaguchi's second album, Endless Fantasy, came out in May 2013 and debuted at No. 1 on the Heatseekers chart. Later that year the band made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

There’s no telling what sounds you’ll hear from your childhood gamer days when catching the Anamanaguchi tour. Be sure to get Anamanaguchi tickets before they sell out!

I just discovered Anamanaguchi's music. It's sort of catchy, almost glitchy, really high-pitched, repetitive electronica. They have a song called "Meow" that sounds just like a sea of hyped-up yet coordinated neon pink and turquoise kitties at a Control club night at the Avalon would. Probably. RAC digs them, so it's worth a shot, as far as I'm concerned. That being said, I don't know how it would be to try to party to this music or see it live because it's just so hard to take seriously. Which is fun for a minute, but not too much longer. Wait a couple months and try listening again. The enjoyment comes in waves. Like corgis on a treadmill.
