Born in Vermont in 1981, folk singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, who was named after Anaïs Nin, began writing songs as a teenager. After recording her first self-released album, The Song They Sang...When Rome Fell, in 2002, she went on to release another album, Hymns for the Exiled, with indie label Waterbug Records before signing with Ani DiFranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. Mitchell's 2010 album Hadestown, a folk-opera retelling of the Orpheus myth, featured guest spots by DiFranco, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem. Mitchell has also worked closely with musicians Rachel Ries and Jefferson Hamer and opened for Bon Iver’s 2012 North American tour. Still a resident of rural Vermont, Anaïs Mitchell is a regular performer at folk hotspots like West Virginia’s Mountain Stage.
