Danny MilnerOct 21, 2012Allen Stone can flat out sing soul music – and he puts on a great show to prove it. Saw him and his band last night at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood and man am I glad I went. These guys put on a fantastic show showcasing Allen’s smooth and soulful voice (think Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson…yes I am mentioning him in the same sentence) backed by some real tight sounds and grooves from the band – especially their drummer. Highlights for me included Allen’s songs Sleep, Celebrate Tonight, and Satisfaction (which brought the house down as the last song before the encore), and amazing cover’s of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” and Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something God”. The best part of the show was toward the end of the set when he parted the audience (like the Red Sea) into two sections and had a dance off between the two sides of the room. Each side went crazy dancing and screaming to the music and added to a night of pure fun and soulful music. It was great seeing him in this smaller setting of about 1,000 people…he is definitely on the rise so I think he’ll only play bigger venues going forward.
SamuelTodd14Aug 16, 2012Can't wait to see Allen Stone at the Life is Good Festival in Boston. I absolutely love his voice. I saw him earlier this year at Saturdays at the 405 and he was outstanding. You can definitely tell the influence of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin in his singing.
