skylar.hardenbrookMar 28, 2013Definitely a unique artist in the hip-hop world, who is immediately identifiable. When I first heard Aesop with the albums Float and Labor Days, I remember the most noticeable point was his voice -- it was this strange, deep, kind of nasal, very staccato flow, yet at the same time his lyrics were so dense that you knew he was a super intelligent guy. That will probably be the biggest barrier to those trying to get into Aesop Rock -- I can see his voice being annoying to the average listener. But beyond that, Aesop is an incredible lyricist who clearly packs as much into his verses as he can. It's like he takes the density of some of the best late 80s-early 90s MCs and makes the lyrical subject matter much more abstract and metaphoric. Aesop's earliest work (Float, Daylight EP, Labor Days) is probably the best place to start for the finest examples of his music.
nlaureolaOct 26, 2012I didn't see all of Aesop Rock's set at FYF Fest, but I do know that he ended with Daylight, and that's really all that matters, right? Bay area hip-hop is pretty slick, and at this particular show, he had guests, which was cool. One guest in particular was just some random dude from the audience whose head they half-shaved on-stage. Hilarious. But the whole show was like this. Not funny necessarily, but engaging. And not just a DJ on a stage pressing a button to make his computer beep rhythmically and telling everyone they have to now jump and and down for him while he stands there pointing. In this case, the DJs/MCs are inviting you to move/groove, but to do whatever you want with it. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, but I do think this is a better kind of audience to be in.
Perfecting the art of drinking responsibly is a noble goal. After all, the older you get, the less socially acceptable it is to play 10 games of beer pong after a record-breaking keg stand.
