Although 311 – pronounced “three-eleven” – has been described as a rap rock, rap metal, funk rock, funk metal, reggae, and jazz fusion band, the prevailing thought is that it’s easier to lump the group in the alternative rock category since it covers so many genres.
After releasing a string of independent albums, 311 signed with Capricorn Records in 1992 and released their debut studio album, Music, in 1993 to critical and commercial success. 311’s debut was certified gold in the U.S. after selling half a million copies, propelled by the hit single “Do You Right,” which ascended to number twenty-seven on the U.S. Billboard alternative chart.
Grassroots, 311’s second album, was also certified gold even though it didn’t have any singles that charted. The band’s breakthrough album, however, was its third, self-titled effort, which sold three million copies, received rave reviews from publications like The Rolling Stone, and featured the group’s most popular single, “Down.”
311 performances are legendary for their length, and the band often records live albums while on tour. In 2000, the band decided to name March 11 “311 Day” and has performed every March since. In 2012, 311 Day was split into two days at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the band performed seventy-nine songs in the two-day concert.
Don’t sleep on your chance to buy 311 tickets! You won’t see a better live jam band.
