Good for Groups in the West Loop Overview

Union Park - Park in West Loop, Chicago

The West Loop’s cavernous converted warehouses are natural places for restaurants and bars catering to big groups. Most of the dining options on the “restaurant row” of Randolph Street are huge spaces with tables for many, communal dining, or private rooms. Though some intimate spots, or ones that don’t take RSVPs, may have wait times that might discourage a big pack, the hotspots that take reservations are huge hits with birthday parties, office outings, and other big gatherings. Celebrity chefs like Stephanie Izard, of Girl & the Goat, tailor their places for big crowds, and trendy communal-table joints like The Publican and Belly Q encourage not only big groups but also mingling among big groups of strangers.

The West Loop is not just dining, however. Two outdoor spaces are perfect gathering spots in warm weather. Union Park is just an ordinary neighborhood green space until summer, when it becomes home to big-name festivals; most notably, the Pitchfork Music Festival. Across the street, the Randolph Street Market is a European-style bazaar with more than two hundred vendors – all hand-picked by festival organizers – hawking an array of antiques, handmade items, and vintage goods. For a small fee, groups can browse indoor and outdoor space, including tented booths that cover the expansive parking lot and a beer garden featuring local brews.
