McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade 2013 Description

The McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade takes place on State Street in downtown Chicago every Thanksgiving, and has been a central player in the city’s Thanksgiving festivities for many years.

Although it only became known as the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade back in 2006, the parade – also called “Chicago's Grand Holiday Tradition” – has been an annual event since the 1930s.

Similar to the much larger Macy’s parade in New York, the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade features a procession of giant helium balloons, floats, marching bands, equestrian units, unique performance groups, and local as well as national celebrities.

The McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade usually starts at around 8am near the intersection of State Street and Congress Parkway and proceeds a little more than a half mile north to Randolph Street.

Recent years have drawn more than 400,000 spectators to the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade, as well as a TV viewing audience in excess of 3.5 million.

Those new to Chicago should keep in mind that it can be quite cold this time of year, so bring a heavy jacket.
